What Pedalsure bike insurance covers

This page states every cover limit, condition, eligibility rule and exclusion in our policy, in plain English. It is the summary. The full policy wording is the contract, and the limits that apply to you are the ones on your own Policy Schedule.

Pedalsure insures bicycles and e-bikes worth £400 to £15,000 each, up to five bikes and £30,000 in total, for UK and Isle of Man residents aged 16 or over. Cover is built from three selectable sections — personal accident, the bike itself, and personal liability — plus paid extensions for overseas and competition use. Theft is covered at home and away from home, subject to published lock requirements and time limits. Cover starts from £2.47 a month. Policies are arranged by Pedalsure No3 Limited and underwritten by Dukes House Insurance Limited in Guernsey.

The three cover sections

Your policy is built from three sections. You choose which you want, and the limits that apply are shown on your Policy Schedule.

Section What it covers Limit
Cover Section 1 — Personal Accident Bodily injury while riding, mounting or dismounting your bike Bronze, Silver or Gold benefit table (below)
Cover Section 2, part A — The Bike Theft, accidental damage and malicious damage to your bike, accessories, specialist clothing and bike boxes Up to the sum insured on your Policy Schedule, maximum £15,000 per bike
Cover Section 2, part B — Replacement Bike Hire Hiring a comparable bike while yours is repaired or replaced on an approved claim £500 per period of insurance
Cover Section 3 — Personal Liability Injury to another person, or damage to their property, caused while you're cycling Up to the limit on your Policy Schedule

Sections 1 and 3 cover you, the named policyholder, only. Neither extends to family members. What family members actually get is permission to ride your insured bike without voiding the theft and damage cover — a "family member" being a parent, spouse, partner, son, daughter, brother or sister who permanently lives with you at the insured location.

Cover Section 1 — Personal accident benefits

Three levels. Higher tiers cost more; the table is the whole difference.

Personal accident cover on its own — no bike, just you — costs £4.83 a month for Bronze, £9.66 for Silver and £14.50 for Gold.

The conditions that apply to personal accident

  • Loss of earnings (temporary total disablement) is selectable and shown on your Policy Schedule. Where selected, it pays a weekly benefit of up to 75% of your average weekly wage after deductions, for up to 52 weeks, if you are totally unable to work following an accident while riding your bike.
  • No benefit is payable for the first 14 days of temporary total disablement.
  • Physiotherapy costs must be incurred within 52 weeks of the accident.
  • Dental treatment must have started within 48 hours of the accident, and covers natural teeth and existing bridges or caps only.
  • The injury must result in death or disability within 12 months of the accident.
  • For triathlon and duathlon events, personal accident cover extends to the swim and run segments as well as the cycle segment.
  • Report a bodily injury claim within 28 days of the accident.

Cover Section 2 — Your bike

What's covered: theft, accidental damage and malicious damage to your bike, whether at home or away from home, subject to the security requirements below. Also covered: accessories fitted to the bike, specialist clothing including triathlon and duathlon kit, and bike boxes — but only when the bike itself is stolen, or suffers accidental damage, at the same time.

Rule Figure
Minimum value per bike £400 — set by our quote engine, not stated in the policy wording
Maximum value per bike £15,000, unless we have agreed cover and reflected it in an endorsement
Maximum number of bikes on one policy 5
Maximum combined value £30,000, unless we have agreed cover and reflected it in an endorsement
Replacement bike hire £500 per period of insurance
Accessories, clothing and personal possessions Within the sum insured on your schedule

How a bike claim is settled

We repair or replace through a specialist dealer who invoices us directly, or through a reputable supplier you nominate. If we don't repair or replace, we pay in cash, less the policy excess and subject to the sums insured on your schedule.

Value means the current equivalent replacement cost of your bike, as shown on your Policy Schedule.

Underinsurance reduces your payout proportionately. If the sum insured you chose is less than the bike's value, any settlement is reduced in proportion. Insure the bike for what a current equivalent would cost — not what you paid in a sale.

We may keep any bike, accessories or possessions we've settled a claim on and treat them as salvage. If you pay by instalments, unpaid premium for the rest of the policy year may be deducted from a claim payment at our discretion.

Replacement bike hire, in detail

Up to £500 in any one period of insurance towards hiring a bike of equivalent specification, in two situations:

  • Your bike is stolen or damaged and a claim is paid under Cover Section 2, part A; or
  • Your bike fails to arrive at a destination outside the UK because of an airline delay.

Costs must be pre-authorised by the claims administrator, must not exceed recognised dealer rates, must not exceed the bike's value or the cost of repair, and need evidence of expenditure. Only the policyholder's hire costs are covered.

The excess

If you make a claim under Cover Section 2 (Theft and Accidental Damage) for loss or damage to your bike, your excess is £75 or 10% of the claim payment value, whichever is greater.

Claim payment value 10% Your excess You receive
£500 £50 £75 (the greater of the two) £425
£1,000 £100 £100 £900
£3,000 £300 £300 £2,700
£8,000 £800 £800 £7,200

No loss-of-earnings benefit is payable for the first 14 days of temporary total disablement under Cover Section 1. No separate excess is currently published for Cover Section 1 (Personal Accident) or Cover Section 3 (Personal Liability) claims.

Security requirements

These are the conditions people most often fall foul of, so here they are in full.

The lock you need

Bike value Requirement
£1,000 or under Sold Secure Silver or Gold rated lock, or a Thatcham-approved motorcycle lock
More than £1,000 Sold Secure Gold rated lock, or a Thatcham-approved motorcycle lock

An approved lock means a lock appropriate to the bike's value from the Master Locksmiths Association Sold Secure list, a Thatcham-approved motorcycle lock, or another lock we have accepted in writing.

Theft is not covered if the bike was secured by a lock approved only for a lower bike value than yours.

How to lock it

Always lock the bike through the frame to an immovable object with an approved lock. We recommend locking through the seat tube and the rear wheel.

An immovable object is:

  • Any solid object fixed in or onto concrete or stone which cannot be undone, removed with the bike, or lifted under or over it;
  • A properly fixed motor vehicle roof rack or properly fixed vehicle bicycle rack; or
  • A bicycle rack at, and supplied by, a train station expressly for securing bicycles, and within the jurisdiction of the British Transport Police or an equivalent policing authority.

Wheels and tyres are only covered if they've been secured to the frame or to an immovable object by an approved lock.

Time limits away from home

12 hours is the limit for a bike left away from your insured location. 24 hours applies if it's left at your place of employment or in a cycle rack within a railway station.

Unattended means the bike is not being used or held by you, or by an adult entrusted with its safe keeping.

Where you keep it at home

One condition applies to every option below: a theft claim at your insured location requires forcible and/or violent entry or exit. A theft with no sign of forced entry — a propped door, a borrowed key, an opportunist walking in — is not covered.

Location What's required
Inside your home Within the exterior walls of the house, self-contained flat, or self-contained lockable room in private halls in which you live. No lock required — but a theft claim still requires forcible and/or violent entry or exit
Garage The garage door needs Secured by Design accreditation, the bike must be locked to an immovable object with an approved lock, and external doors need a 5-lever mortice deadlock (BS3621), an approved lock or a CEN 4 or higher rated padlock
Shed Unless it's an approved shed — a metal bicycle shed with Secured by Design accreditation — the bike must be locked to an immovable object with an approved lock and the external door secured as for a garage
Communal hallway or communal outbuilding Must be within the building, or within the boundaries of the property, in which you live. Locked through the frame to an immovable object with an approved lock, and a theft claim requires forcible and/or violent entry or exit
Garden, driveway or railings — note the policy treats anywhere outside the exterior walls of your home, garage, shed or outbuilding as away from the insured location Approved lock through the frame to an immovable object, and the 12-hour limit applies
Temporary residence (holiday home, guest house) Covered for a maximum of 30 days at any one time during the period of insurance at that address
In or attached to a motor vehicle Only one bike is covered if left unattended in or attached to a motor vehicle. A properly fixed roof rack or vehicle bike rack counts as an immovable object. Doors and windows must be locked and closed and the bike stored out of sight. Between 9pm and 6am the vehicle must be fitted with a Thatcham category 1 alarm/immobiliser, a category 2 immobiliser or a category 3 steering lock. Forcible and violent entry is required — visible damage at the point of entry, or to the lock or immovable object
Boat, narrow boat or watercraft Not covered

Need a lock that qualifies? Pedalsure customers get up to 40% off Hiplok: the Hiplok DX at £30 (Sold Secure Diamond), Hiplok Gold at £40 and Hiplok E-DX at £50. One lock per bike, up to five.

Two conditions that can invalidate your cover

Upload photos of your bikes within 30 days of buying your policy. The policy wording is explicit: "You understand that you must upload photos of your insured bikes to our website within 30 days of purchasing your policy. Failure to do so may invalidate your insurance cover." It takes two minutes in your dashboard.

Keep the lock and its receipt. For a theft claim we need the key and a receipt for the lock showing its make and model, or the remains of the lock. Without one of those, theft is excluded.

Evidence of ownership means an original purchase receipt showing the date, the price paid, details of the bike, and the name and address of the seller — or other evidence that clearly demonstrates ownership and proof of purchase. Any claim where you can't provide it is excluded.

E-bikes

Your e-bike must be legal for use on UK public roads as an electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC) and must not be treated as a motor vehicle under current government regulations. If it isn't, there is no cover under the policy.

Twist-and-go EAPCs are ineligible unless the throttle is only capable of operating in walk mode.

A "bike" under this policy means any cycle — including a tricycle, tandem, trailer cycle, push scooter or cargo cycle — powered by human pedalling and/or battery. It excludes ePeds, iPeds, vehicles subject to the Road Traffic Act, and any e-bike that isn't an EAPC.

We don't set our own wattage or speed figures — the policy defers to the statutory UK EAPC definition, so the legal standard is the standard.

Racing, sportives and events

Competition use requires an additional premium. The exclusion is unambiguous: any accident while the bike is being used in competition is not covered unless the required additional premium has been paid and the cover is shown on your Policy Schedule. The same condition repeats across Cover Sections 1, 2 and 3.

A competition means an organised cycling or triathlon event from which a winner is selected.

Professional racing is excluded, except time trials. Stunts and the use of equipment designed for stunts are excluded throughout.

Cover abroad

Territory Cover
United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man Standard
Worldwide, up to 30 days per policy year Additional premium, must be shown on your schedule
Worldwide, up to 60 days per policy year Additional premium, must be shown on your schedule
USA and Canada Personal liability is not covered for any liability arising from use of a bike in the USA or Canada

Flying with your bike: it must be packed in a rigid bike box and you need the airline luggage receipt. A fabric bike bag is not a bike box. If an airline delay means your bike doesn't arrive, replacement bike hire of up to £500 applies.

  • punitive, exemplary or aggravated damages
